NL We houden ons aan de regels zoals gesteld door het RIVM en er kunnen maar 15 gasten per vertoning aanwezig zijn. Je kunt een uur voor aanvang van de film een reservering maken bij de bar. Houd er bij ons rekening mee om op 1,5 meter afstand van anderen te blijven. We vertrouwen erop dat iedereen verantwoordelijk is voor hun gezondheids- en hygiënecontrole.

NL Yoshi, Joy, Susan en Lucy lezen alles van de mensenrechten-campagne en de wetgeving inzake haatmisdrijven tot de non-profit van sociale bewegingen. Criminal Queers is een speelse, radicale trans / queer film tegen het gevangenis-industriecomplex en richting een wereld zonder muren. Herinnerend dat gevangenisuitbraken zowel een theoretische als materiële praktijk van vrijheid zijn, stelt deze film voor welke ruimtes zouden kunnen worden geopend als koevoeten, pruiken en metalen vijlen instrumenten worden voor transformatie. Met een speciale deelname van Angela Davis.
EN Follow Yoshi, Joy, Susan and Lucy as they fiercely read everything from the Human Rights Campaign and hate crimes legislation to literature on the non-profitization of social movements. Criminal Queers visualizes a radical trans/queer struggle against the prison industrial complex and towards a world without walls. Remembering that prison breaks are both a theoretical and material practice of freedom, this film imagines what spaces might be opened up if crowbars, wigs, and metal files become tools for transformation. Criminal Queers is a film about the possibility of collective liberation from the multiple ways our hearts, genders, and desires are confined. With a brief cameo appearance from Angela Davis!

NL De speelfilm zal vergezeld worden door een oudere, korte kroniek van Yoshi en zijn radicale queergang-avonturen, deze keer over seks en verzet, het belichten van de problematiek rondom het homohuwelijk en homonormativiteit, het ontmantelen van conservatisme en de staat en het ongedaan maken van het Rijk. Dit alles geserveerd met een sausje van pittige brutaliteit en een verpletterend woeste authenticiteit.
EN The feature film will be accompanied by an older short piece that chronicles Yoshi and his radical queer gang’s adventures, this time exploring sex and resistance, exposing the trouble with gay marriage and homonormativity, dismantling conservatism and the state and undoing the Empire – all while serving zesty sass as well as crushing and fierce realness.

NL De Kaspar Hauser van de 21e eeuw wordt door de golven meegenomen naar een haast verlaten mediterraan eiland. Nagenoeg ten dode opgeschreven maar nog steeds in het bezit van zijn koptelefoon en Adidas-broek; is Kaspar voorbestemd voor een Messiaanse missie. Hij gaat erop uit om rave-cultuur naar het vervallen eiland te brengen. Het is de sheriff (Vincent Gallo) die hem aanbidt. Het is de Groot-hertogin, de regent van het eiland, die de nieuwkomer niet accepteert en die haar handlanger (eveneens Gallo) erop afstuurt om de orde te herstellen. Een opwindend niet te classificeren wonder, geleid door de altijd oplopende soundtrack van Vitalic.
EN 21st century Kaspar Hauser finds himself swept on the shores of a semi-deserted Mediterranean island. Almost dead, but still wearing his headphones and Adidas pants, Kaspar is set on a Messianic mission – to bring rave culture to the derelict island. The Sheriff (Vincent Gallo) adores him, but the Grand Duchess, regent of the island, rejects the newcomer and his enterprises, sending her henchman (also Gallo) to restore order. An electrifying, unclassifiable marvel conducted by Vitalic’s always-ascending soundtrack.

Het experimenteert met vormen, processen en materialen. Het onderzoekt de interactieve mengvormen van performances en film: uitdagende werken die breken met het canon van cinema. NL Deze avond staat in het teken van de jonge filmmaker Giorgos Efthimiou uit Athene. We vertonen vijf van zijn experimentele korte films. Zijn films onderzoeken onderling verbonden verhalen en personages, zoals onder andere twee astronautenimkers die een professionele pointerhond inhuren om hen te helpen een mobiele telefoon te vinden, een groep mensen die leeft tussen octopussen en citroenen die het filmproces overnemen. EN This evening is dedicated to the young filmmaker Giorgos Efthimiou from Athens. We will be screening five of his experimental short films. His films explore interlinked stories and characters; such as two astronaut beekeepers who hire a professional pointer dog to help them find a mobile phone, a group of people living amongst octopuses and lemons that take over the filmmaking process, amongst others. Malenkaya Vera (Little Vera)

NL Er is weinig geloof in de toekomst te midden van de glasnost en de perestrojka, waar een uitgebluste en vermoeide jeugd, gefascineerd door ‘verdorven’ westerse rock ’n roll en bootleg lp’s van idolen uit de tegencultuur, naar Marlboro sigaretten zoeken als hét teken van vrijheid. Hoofdfiguur Vera – wiens naam letterlijk ‘geloof’ betekent – dient als de perfecte metafoor voor deze generatie die opgroeide in de laatste fase van de Sovjet-Unie. Veel van de handeling speelt in het oude en benauwende appartement van haar ouders in een beklemmende sfeer van huiselijk geruzie die plaats vindt in de bredere context van sociale ellende en schaarste. Vera studeert af aan de middelbare school, maar heeft weinig toekomstperspectief en geen idee wat ze met zichzelf aan moet. Een ‘niksnut’ in de ogen van haar ouders, is ze er trots op aan tafel te roken, luide rockmuziek te draaien en is ze ongehoorzaam terwijl ze uitgaat in uitdagende rokjes (en met veel haarspray) om met haar vrienden te drinken. Maar dan ontmoet ze Sergej en wordt tot over haar oren verliefd. Geen makkelijke romantiek wacht op haar: sociale en maatschappelijke voorwaarden dwingen haar een platgetreden pad tot het huwelijk te volgen.
De film is, in de woorden van Jeffrey Babcock, “een tijdscapsule” die je helemaal en intens in een recent hoofdstuk van de geschiedenis opslorpt. Maar ook in onze eigen tegenwoordige sociale en politieke wereld voelt Little Vera verbazingwekkend vertrouwd en herkenbaar.
EN There is little belief in the midst of the Perestroika, where a worn out and jaded youth, fascinated with “degenerate” western rock n rock and bootleg vinyls of counterculture idols, seek Marlboro cigarettes as tokens of freedom. The protagonist Vera, whose name literally means “belief,” serves as the perfect metonymy of this new post-USSR generation. Much of the action takes place in her parents' old and cramped apartment in an oppressive atmosphere of domestic arguments couched in the broader context of social hardship and scarcity. Vera graduates from high school but has few future prospects and no clue what to do with herself. Deemed an ‘idle’ by her parents, she takes pride in smoking at the table, blasting loud rock music, and relentlessly disobeying them, while going out in sassy mini skirts (and plenty of hairspray) to drink with her friends. And then she meets Sergey, falling madly in love. No easy romance awaits her – social and material conditions force her to follow a well-trodden path to marriage.
The movie is, as Jeffrey Babcock puts it, “a time capsule,” absorbing you fully and viscerally in a recent chapter from history. Given our contemporary social and political world, however, Little Vera feels astoundingly relatable and familiar.

The Poetics of Memory and Decay: Henri Plaat

NL De Amsterdamse filmmaker Henri Plaat toont ons een wereld die wonderbaarlijk en vol schoonheid is. Maar hij laat ons ook een een wereld vol geschiedenis zien: sporen uit het verleden en herinneringen aan oorlog en vernietiging. In dit geheel analoge programma (op 16mm) gebruikt Plaat de aanpak van het absurde, en onderzoekt hij speels het theatrale en de kwaliteit van verwondering door associatieve improvisatie. Hij put uit een veelheid aan bronnen: desolate landschappen en vervallen oude steden, archeologie, oude geschriften, vooroorlogse films, filmdiva's en geluidsopnames. Hij laat zijn blik vallen op vergane wereldrijken. De melancholie voor antieke splendeur is aanwezig. Deze is zowel nostalgisch als een drang naar essentie, om te leren van de herkomst en het bijbehorend sentiment voor de toekomstige mensheid te bewaren.
Nederlandse première in samenwerking met het Eye Filmmuseum.
EN Amsterdam filmmaker Henri Plaat brings us a miraculous world replete with beauty and history but also memories of war and destruction. In this analogue short film programme (16mm), Plaat employs the absurd and the playful, theatrically examining the quality of wonder through associative improvisation. He draws from a multitude of sources: desolate landscapes and dilapidated old cities, archaeology, ancient writings, pre-war films, film divas, and sound recordings. His gaze on fallen empires, and the melancholy of ancient greatness, expresses an urge for the essential and a desire to preserve it for posterity.
Dutch premiere in collaboration with Eye Filmmuseum.

EN A program of the Latin American community at Resolution: MA Moving Image, at the Sandberg Institute in collaboration with Filmhuis Cavia. Two Latin American films that focus on intimate spaces as catalyzers for sociopolitical issues. An evening to reflect on the current situation of the region in relation to gender identity, socio-economic conditions and private spaces.
We will have video presentations by the filmmakers, furthering the conversation about the political and social subject of their work. We will distribute a fanzine entitled From the Verge Looking Inwards, a publication with texts by Latin American artists based in The
Netherlands, reflecting also on the notion of intimate space that the films propose.

NL Ricardo, de vader van Natalia, kreeg twaalf jaar geleden de diagnose parkinson. Door deze ziekte werd bij hem geen dopamine meer aangemaakt, een neurohormoon dat verantwoordelijk is voor beweging in het lichaam en het gevoel van geluk. Tijdens deze jaren hadden ze een zware familiecrisis: Natalia vertelde haar ouders namelijk ook dat ze op vrouwen viel. Ze begreep niet waarom haar ouders deze keuze niet accepteerde, hoewel ze in hun jeugd linkse militanten waren die vochten voor gelijkheid, rechtvaardigheid en vrijheid. Nu, meer dan een decennium later, ontmoeten ze elkaar weer. Om te praten over familiewaarden, homoseksualiteit, ideologische strijd en wat de vordering van Ricardo’s ziekte heeft betekend.
EN 12 years ago, Ricardo, Natalia’s father, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. With this condition, Dopamine is stopped, a neurohormone responsible for the movement on the body and the feeling of happiness. During those years they had a very strong family crisis, and Natalia also told her parents that she liked women. She could not understand why if they were left-wing militants in their youth and fighting for equality and freedom, they couldn’t accept that choice. Today, a decade later, they meet to talk about family ideas, homosexuality, ideological struggles and what the advance of Ricardo’s disease has meant.
