EN A captivating evening showcasing the exceptional talent and vision of female directors in animation. The program features a selection of short animations from around the globe, each reflecting unique storytelling styles, innovative techniques, and diverse cultural perspectives. This event highlights women’s voices in animation—voices that have often been underrepresented yet have significantly shaped the art form. From visually stunning experimental pieces to heartfelt narratives, this collection celebrates the power of animation as a medium for creativity, expression, and connection.

This program is curated by Nahid Malayeri and Narjes Mohammadi. After graduating from St. Joost School of Art and Design with a master’s in animation, they combine their creative expertise with a passion for collecting, selecting, and presenting animation art. Together, they have redefined the landscape of animation by focusing on collections by female directors. So far they have collaborated with Museum Arnhem, Kaboom Film Festival, Filmhuis Cavia, and Rozet in Arnhem.

In the Shadow of the Cypress

An old former captain suffering from PTSD, lives with his daughter in a humble house by the sea. They live in solitude and struggle with a harsh life. The old captain wants to be a caring and loving father but he fails to succeed. One morning something unexpected happens.
 

 

My Mother’s Pain

Fifty-nine-year-old factory worker Beryl is totally obsessed with drawing, and her fixation dominates the entire household. Apart from her husband, Ivor, Beryl’s model and muse, the whole family is addicted to something: her son, Colin, is a technical geek and her sister, Beverly, is a fanatically narcissistic taxidermist. Obsession is in the family’s DNA.

The nuns are living melted together in happy harmony. When one nun finds a man in the garden, the harmony breaks and she loses the rhythm with others. When her dreams do not come true, she finds out that everyone in the community has their own hidden universe.

The Garbage Man

On a hot August afternoon, the family gathered at the table remembering uncle Botão: the Colonial War, emigration to France, where he lived and worked thirty years as a garbage man. Memories of each are crossed to tell the story of a man who lived a hard life through humor and fantasy, like when he returned to Belmonte, in a van full of trash, turned into a real treasure.
