EN In many circles, the name of Rosa von Praunheim evokes a kind of mythological legend. Since the late 1960s he has been one of the leading figures of independent German cinema and the underground cultural scene, having knocked out over 150 films. He has lived on both sides of the Berlin Wall, and also in New York back in the 1970s. In West Berlin his flamboyant spirit and wild confrontational aesthetics helped create the unique counter-culture that defined that city during its heydays of the seventies and eighties.

Rosa's films center on the lives of outsiders, uncompromising individuals who don't fit any paradigm or social system. Much of his work delves into the Queer world, as in his first international success It Is Not the Homosexual Who Is Perverse, But the Society in Which He Lives, which he threw on the screens in 1971. What ensued was nothing short of a cinematic and societal earthquake. Already in this film we see a rigor and brutal honesty that can't be found anywhere in cinema today. Since then he has followed his own artistic vision and created his own trailblazing path of independent filmmaking. A very personal vision exploring both fiction and documentary films, often fusing the two together. His films can switch from biting realism to dreamily surreal sequences.

As a public personality, Rosa stands out for for his colorful antics, but is also respected for his very serious work as an activist in the queer liberation movement. His stances on controversial issues were often unorthodox, but they have influenced LGBTIQ* issues worldwide.

Darkroom-.jpg

EN A both lyrical and sombre exploration of Berlin’s contemporary gay scene centred on the story of Lars and his partner Roland, who move to Berlin together to pursue a free and independent life, until Lars becomes obsessed with a deadly party drug which takes over the couples’ life. Told in a dreamy patchwork of narrative styles, this is one of Praunheim’s most celebrated works of recent years; touching upon known themes to the German auteur from a refreshingly new angle.

In the presence of Rosa von Praunheim.

EN This amazing flick is the recounting of a true story about Charlotte von Mahlsdorf. She has an amazing story, and one that puts a spotlight on secret histories that are being lost. Charlotte was a transvestite in Nazi Germany, and afterwards in the former East Germany where she ran a museum that became a hot spot for parties and discussions for the gay community. She had a discreet yet determined way of undermining any regime she lived under, and she was alway persecuted all her life - in Nazi Germany, East Germany and so-called unified Germany after the fall of the wall. This documentary charts her life, using two actresses to perform her earlier life, and she herself is present to wrap things up. What an inspiring story – about fighting for your own spirit against all odds.

EN This flick from the early 1970s is so direct and uncompromising that it's shocking. Cinema over the course of years has become so soft and likeable, making the fearlessness of this spirit simply impossible. It is bound to provoke controversy... and it is such a relief because of that. We follow a young man named Daniel who moves to the big city of Berlin and steps into the various gay subculture scenes there. From private bedrooms of the poor, to the country homes of the rich, from the gay bars to the more hardcore meeting places in the city parks. From queens to leather boys to elderly men who hang out at the public toilets hoping to score. As events unfold, they are punctuated with a narration that is a biting critique of what we are watching. Therefore, it works on two levels at the same time... the personal and the sociological.

Anita: Tänze des Lasters (Anita: Dances of Vice)

Rosa von Praunheim | 1986 | Duitsland | 89' | EN subs

Anita-.jpg

EN Back in the 1920's, when Berlin was a wild and decadent city, there was a cabaret dancer called Anita Berber who was notorious for her sizzling bisexuality. She worked together with her sometimes lover Sebastian Droste, and their nude dancing, cocaine habits and uninhibited sex lives made them the symbol of all the excess that Berlin represented. Berber was thrown into a mental hospital after exposing herself on the streets of Berlin, and died of tuberculosis at age 29. What unfolds is a tale about a woman who embraces pleasure, passion and even madness over the restrictions of society. Low budget but highly stylized, it's a magical film that has both spirit and beauty. When it first hit the screens in the underground circuits in the 1980s, it was a cult favorite, but today this rough gem is criminally forgotten.

Stadt Der Verlorenen Seelen (City of Lost Souls)

Seelen-.jpg

EN Beautifully trashy flick by the flamboyant Rosa von Praunheim. A group of American queers somehow land in Berlin, and create their own counter-culture. These eccentrics (of every imaginable sexual orientation, or disorientation) prove to be too much even for West Berlin. And contrary to its mythical reputation of being subversive, Praunheim shows us an uptight city of Berlin, rife with hidden antisemitism, nationalism, xenophobia, and transphobia. Yes, it's sleazy, campy, hilarious and  outrageous – but it is also deeply human, even shockingly so. The cast includes the legendary drag queen Angie Stardust. A real gem, and an outrageously rare screening.

Ein Virus kennt keine Moral (A Virus Knows No Morals)

Virus-.jpg

NL Een satirische, activistische zwarte komedie over aids?

EN In this 1980s camp activist comedy on the AIDS crisis, von Praunheim presents a series of amoral sketches, reflecting through parody on the spread of the virus in society. These short pieces of fiction serve as a document of a time in which the main homophobic concern of straight people was that HIV/AIDS would escape the queer community to become a global pandemic. Expect nurses rolling the dice to see which of their patients will die next, a therapist convincing her client to kill his own mother, von Praunheim himself playing a corrupt bathhouse owner, and much more.

Neurosia – 50 Jahre pervers (Neurosia: 50 Years of Perversity)

Rosa von Praunheim | 1995 | Duitsland | 89' | EN subs

Neurosia-.jpg

NL Een thriller?

A biopic? A mockumentary? Neurosia is all that! After 25 years making scandalous films, Rosa von Praunheim certainly made a lot of enemies. In Neurosia he is killed on stage as he greets the audience after his latest film. Gesine, a journalist, is commissioned to make a television series about him. She starts investigating Praunheim's life, trying to find out who killed him. Was Rosa not loved enough? Did he pass himself off as a homosexual only for publicity reasons? Did he pay his actors enough? Neurosia elegantly brings together Praunheim’s whole oeuvre, celebrating his fiftieth birthday at the time of its release.
