UNA GIORNATA PARTICOLARE

NL Europa verandert. We zien de opkomst van steeds meer rechtse regeringen, opkomend nationalisme, een worstelende EU en natuurlijk Brexit. En eind mei zijn de Europese verkiezingen. Gezien het tijdstip en het belang van de Europese verkiezingen vertonen we in samenwerking met MOMA&CO een Italiaans tweeluik rondom de ontwikkelingen in Europa en de veranderingen die Europa te wachten staat.

Op 18 en 23 mei draaien we de Italiaanse film Una Giornata Particolare in Cavia. En op 25 mei vertonen we Il Conformista in MOMA&CO. Op deze wijze willen we een bijdrage leveren aan de conversatie en mensen laten nadenken over de ontwikkelingen en veranderingen in Europa. Wat betekent dit voor de democratie in Europa?

EN Europe is changing. We witness the establishment of more and more right-wing governments, the rise of nationalism, a struggling EU and off course the Brexit. At the end of May the European elections will take place. Considering the timing and importance of the European elections, we screen in collaboration with MOMA&CO, a diptych on the developments in Europe and the changes that are ahead of the continent.

On May 18 and 23 we will screen the film Una Giornata Particolare at Cavia. And on May 25 Il Conformista is programmed at MOMA&CO. In this way we would like to contribute to the debate and make people think about the upcoming change. What does this mean for democracy in Europe?

NL Una Giornata Particolare is een Italiaans drama, met in de hoofdrollen Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni en John Vernon. De film speelt zich af in het Rome van 1938. Het verhaal volgt een vrouw en haar buurman, die thuisblijven op de dag dat Adolf Hitler Benito Mussolini bezoekt. De twee, zo verschillend, maar allebei slachtoffer van hetzelfde regime, worden in de loop van die dag voorzichtig verliefd op elkaar. In de film komen genderrollen, fascisme en de vervolging van homoseksuelen onder het regime van Mussolini aan de orde. Una Giornata Particolare ontving verscheidene nominaties en prijzen, zoals een César Award voor beste buitenlandse Film, een Golden Globe voor beste niet-Engelstalige film, en twee Academy Award nominaties in 1978.

EN Una Giornata Particolare (A Special Day) is a Italian drama film starring Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni and John Vernon. Set in Rome in 1938, its narrative follows a woman and her neighbor who stay home the day Adolf Hitler visits Benito Mussolini. The two, so different but both victims of the same regime, fall gently in love with each other during the course of that day. Themes addressed in the film include gender roles, fascism, and the persecution of homosexuals under the Mussolini regime. It received several nominations and awards, including a César Award for Best Foreign Film, a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, and two Academy Award nominations in 1978. It is featured on the list of the 100 Italian films to be saved.
