NL Mehmet Kara, een jonge Turk uit de stad Tyrus in Izmir, is onlangs naar Istanbul verhuisd en werkt bij het waterbehandelingsbedrijf van de stad. Hij heeft een vriendin, Arzu, die in een wasserij werkt. Vanwege een misverstand wordt hij gearresteerd door de politie, waar hij wordt verward met een Koerdische verdachte. Nadat hij bruut in elkaar geslagen is wordt hij vrijgelaten, maar binnen enkele dagen verliest hij zijn appartement, zijn baan en uiteindelijk Arzu. Wanneer zijn Koerdische vriend Berzan sterft aan een hersenbloeding na confrontaties met de politie tijdens een protestdemonstratie, besluit Mehmet een lange reis te maken om het lichaam naar de geboortestad van zijn vriend te brengen, vlak bij de grens met Irak. Tijdens deze reis leert hij over de situatie van de Koerdische mensen in het oosten van het land.
EN Mehmet Kara, a young Turk from the town of Tire in Izmir, has recently moved to Istanbul and works at the city's water maintenance company. He has a girlfriend, Arzu, who works at a laundry. Due to a misunderstanding, he is arrested by the police, being mistaken as a Kurdish suspect. After being brutally beaten, he is released, but within days he loses his apartment, his job, and eventually Arzu. When his Kurdish friend Berzan dies of a brain hemorrhage following clashes with the police during a protest demonstration, Mehmet decides to embark on a long journey to bring the body to his friend's home town, near the border with Iraq. It is on this journey where he learns the situation of the Kurdish people in the east of the country.

NL De eerste film van Fernando Arrabal is een autobiografisch relaas van zijn kinderjaren. Zoals ook te zien is in zijn latere werken blijken twee ervaringen een funderende betekenis te hebben: de verdwijning en moord van de linkse vader, die de hoop op avontuur en vrijheid belichaamt, en de stikkende bescherming en bewaking van de vrouwen thuis, die voor de meest nauwkeurige beheersing van het lichaam zorgen en de geldigheid van een totalitaire en rigide manicheïsme in stand houden. Viva la Muerte is een ongeremd en provocatief filmisch experiment, maar niet ongegrond; het is eerder alsof de kunstenaar het leed zich probeert toe te eigenen door middel van beelden en woorden. Dit is een verbluffend surrealistisch werk dat het surrealisme van zijn esthetische zelfgenoegzaamheid bevrijdt, en het weer actueel maakt, als de enige manier om een taal van het onbegrip te verwerven. Viva la Muerte werd in ‘culturele ballingschap’ in Frankrijk geproduceerd en in Tunesië gefilmd. De film bevat tekeningen gemaakt door Roland Topor.
EN Fernando Arrabal’s first film is an autobiographical account of his childhood. As also seen in his later works, two experiences are of a foundational importance: the disappearance and later assassination of his leftist father, where the hope of adventure and freedom is projected, and the suffocating care and surveillance of the women in the house, who exercise the most meticulous dominance of the body and ensure the rigidness of a totalitarian Manichaeism. Viva la Muerte is a rampant and provocative filmic experiment, but not gratuitous; it is rather as if the artist seeks to appropriate the suffering by means of image and words. This is a stunning surrealist work that liberates surrealism from its aesthetic self-satisfaction, making it again necessary, as the only possible means to gain a language of incomprehension. Viva la Muerte was produced in ‘cultural exile’ in France and filmed in Tunisia. It includes drawings made by Roland Topor.

NL La estanquera de Vallecas is iets unieks in de cine quinqui − de films die in de late jaren 70 en jaren 80 in Spanje werden gemaakt, vaak door echte straatcriminelen en heroïneverslaafden, die de realiteit van de jeugd in de buitenwijken van de grote steden afbeeldden. Deze film gaat voorbij de dramatische rauwheid van Eloy de la Iglesia’s vroegere werken en maakt van de ellendige setting een theatrale komedie die zich richt op de potentiële solidariteit tussen arbeiders tegen boosdoeners die veel gevaarlijker zijn dan de junkie en de kwajongens van el barrio. La estanquera is de bekendste quinqui-film onder het grote publiek in Spanje. Hij is echter nog nooit in première gegaan in het buitenland en Cavia zal hem voor het eerst met Engelse ondertiteling vertonen.
EN The tobacconist of Vallecas is a rare thing in the genre known as cine quinqui − the cinema made in the late 70s en 80s in Spain, often by real street criminals and heroin addicts, that portrayed the reality of the working class youth in the suburbs of the big cities. This film goes beyond the dramatic rawness of the Eloy de la Iglesia’s earlier works turning the miserable setting into a theatrical comedy and focusing on the potential solidarity between working-class people against evildoers much more dangerous than the junkie and the brat from el barrio. La estanquera is the quinqui-film that has reached the biggest public in Spain. It has nevertheless never been premiered abroad and it will be showed in Cavia for the first time with English subtitles.

NL Een karakter film en coming-of-age-stijl video over de levens van mensen die in een woonwijk in een cyber-achtige omgeving wonen, waarin zij hun vriend Skiver helpen omgaan met familieproblemen. Er wordt gebruik gemaakt van een aangepaste versie van de VLC-speler: het videowerk heeft eigenlijk een vertakkend verhaal, dat zich ontwikkelt naarmate de tijd vordert: scène-ontwikkelingen worden willekeurig bepaald door een algoritme!

Skiver through family issues. A modified version of VLC player is being

Atrabilious in een korte tijd in geslaagd om zich te vestigen als een voorhoede van zowel nieuwe als gevestigde experimentele filmmakers: een showcase van experimentele film-videokunst van meer dan 21 internationale kunstenaars.
