Februari

Audience Emancipated: The Struggle for Emek Movie Theater weet haar premisse reeds in de titel te vatten.

CLASSIC

Benny's Video

Michael Haneke, 1992, Oostenrijk/Zwitserland, 105 min, digital

EN This early work by Austrian director Michael Haneke can clearly be placed within the theme of the director’s more famous films like Funny Games and Caché. Benny, child of distant bourgeois parents, is completely absorbed and numbed by the violent videos he keeps watching. To such an extent that he does not stop himself from committing violent crimes. The film asks important questions about our relation to a world that becomes seemingly more distant from us because of technology. Apart from that, like Haneke’s Das Weisse Band, the film takes a long hard look at the responsibility of parents and the upbringing of a child. Despite the dated technology, the film is just as relevant to today’s world as to the time it first came out.

CONTEMPORARY

The Duke of Burgundy

Peter Strickland, 2014, VK/Hongarije, 104 min, digital
