NL Deze belangrijke onafhankelijke documentaire over de gevangenschap van orka’s, in het bijzonder de orka Tilikum die verantwoordelijk was voor de dood van drie mensen, heeft een grote boycot van SeaWorld en een enorme afname van bezoekersaantallen veroorzaakt. Zelfs het verhaal van Pixar’s Finding Dory werd erop aangepast en SeaWorld San Diego heeft inmiddels aangekondigd op te houden met hun orka-shows. Het toont aan dat zelfs een kleine film grote veranderingen in de wereld kan bewerkstelligen.
EN This important independent documentary about the imprisoning of killer whales, focussing in particular on the killer whale Tilikum who was responsible for the death of three people, has caused a large boycott of SeaWorld and a significant drop in visitor numbers. Even the story of Pixar’s Finding Dory has been adjusted as a direct result of this film, and now SeaWorld San Diego has announced that they will soon phase out their killer whale show. It shows that even a small film can make big changes in the world.

NL Profetisch bleek deze kunstfilm en documentaire van Belgische kunstenaar Johan Grimonprez te zijn: vlak voor de gebeurtenissen van 11 september schetste Grimonprez een uitgebreide en diepzinnige geschiedenis van vliegtuiggijzelingen. De film bestaat uit nieuwsflarden, stukjes sciencefictionfilm en home video, en geeft een uitstekend inzicht in de situatie die tot 11 september leidde en nog steeds een grote invloed op het politieke landschap heeft.
EN An art film and documentary by Belgian artist Johan Grimonprez that proved to be prophetic: right before the events of 9/11 Grimonprez painted this exhaustive and profound history of airplane-hijackings. The film exists of bits of news, science-fiction film and home video, and provides excellent insight into the situation that led to 9/11 and is still very influential on our political landscape.

NL Deze experimentele stille film wordt beschouwd als een van de meest innovatieve en invloedrijke films uit het stille tijdperk. Het laat het dagelijkse leven zien van een Sovjet-stad. De film is beroemd om de vele filmische technieken die regisseur Dziga Vertov verzonnen of ontwikkeld heeft.
De vertoning (op 35mm!) wordt bijgestaan door een live performance, gebaseerd op een tekst van Vertov zelf, met klavichord en gesproken woord.

EN This experimental silent movie is considered one of the most innovative and influential films of the silent era. It presents the daily life of a Soviet city. The film is famous for the range of cinematic techniques its director Dziga Vertov invented or developed.
The screening (on 35mm!) will be accompanied by a live performance, based on a text by Vertov himself, with clavichord and spoken word.

NL Deze laatste zondagmiddag van de maand komt Franse filmmaker Gaëlle Rouard naar Cavia. Zij projecteert zelf live drie van haar handgemaakte experimentele 16mm films:

Gaëlle Rouard is een alchemist gespecialiseerd in het filmbewerkingsproces: ze ontwikkelt verschillende methoden om de film chemisch te bewerken tot er een totaal nieuw kunstwerk ontstaat en tegelijkertijd experimenteert ze met de mogelijkheden van live multi-projection. Haar films zijn los van vaste structuren maar hebben wel allemaal een duistere en geheimzinnige sfeer. Visualisatie van de natuur en de mens zijn veel terugkerende thema's.
EN Gaëlle Rouard is an alchemist specialised in the film editing process: she develops different methods on how to chemically process film into a completely new artwork. At the same time she experiments with new possibilities in live multi-projection. Her films are barred from solid structures: they all have a dark and mysterious atmosphere. Visualisation of nature and human beings are reoccurring themes in her work.

NL Voor deze speciale eenmalige vertoning werkt Filmhuis Cavia samen met het Impakt Festival in Utrecht aan een restrospectief van de Portugese regisseur Pedro Costa. Horse Money is een mysterieuze en dromerige film die meer suggereert dan narratief te zijn. Compromisloos en serieus, omschreven door The Guardian als "the Samual Becket of film", Costa handelt radicaal.
EN For this special one-off screening Filmhuis Cavia will join the Impakt Festival in Utrecht with a retrospective of the films of Portuguese director Pedro Costa. Horse Money is a mysterious and dreamlike film that suggests rather than tells you a story. Uncompromising and serious, described by The Guardian as “the Samuel Beckett of film”, Costa is unlike any filmmaker working today.
