DEBORAH S. PHILLIPS is a Berlin-based visual artist who has been working in a variety of analogue media including 16mm film, slide collages, works-on- paper, installations, performances and handmade books for more than 25 years. Her work often involves in-depth explorations of a theme, such as architectural ornament or monochromes over the course of years. Her series dedicated to 3 colours of light will be completed, after 12 years, by March 2017. She has presented her work at Arsenal (Berlin, GE), Lightcone (Paris, FR), Fajr Festival Teheran (Iran), Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen (GE), Toronto International Film Festival (CA), L'Alternativa Barcelona (ES) Anthology Film Archives, and Millennium Film Workshop (NY), Women Make Waves Taipei (TW) and the European Media Art Festival Osnabrück, (GE) among others.

KLARA RAVAT creates media and odour artworks, installations and experimental films. By opposing the divisionbetween the realm of memory and the realm of experience, Ravat absorbs the tradition of remembrance art into daily practice. This personal follow-up and revival of a past habit is important as an act of reflection. By investigating the concept of landscape in an adventurous and exploratory way, she wants to amplify the wonderment of the spectator by creating compositions or settings that generate tranquil poetic images that leave traces and balances on the edge of alienation and recognition. Her works appear as dreamlike images, often accompanied by scent, in which fiction and reality meet, meanings shift, past and present fuse. For the past years Ravat has been developing works related to the sense of smell as a research on how do we perceive through this sense. Klara Ravat currently lives and works in Berlin.

Black Coal, Thin Ice

Yi'nan Diao, 2014, China, 110'

EN A fascinating contemporary interpretation of the film noir genre from Chinese director Yi’nan Diao. An ex-cop is investigating a series of murders discovered by human body parts suddenly turning up in a coal-processing plant. Filmed in a unique way, the cold and bleak atmosphere of the film depicting life in an industrial Chinese city is unlike any seen in contemporary Western filmmaking.

Psychick Cinema presents: Twenty to Life: The Life & Times of John Sinclair

Steve Gebhardt, 2007, USA, 86'

EN In the mid-1960s, the US escalated its undeclared war against the spiritual brotherhoods, urban tribes, and psychedelic churches that emerged in major cities across the US. Spear-headed by the FBI, this wave of repression targeted the most charismatic figureheads that had emerged from the psychedelic underground. The persecution of these men and women, as well as thousands of stoned visionaries, gave rise to a new cultural folk-hero: the 'pot martyr'. The most famous 'pot martyr' to emerge from this period was John Sinclair, minister of propaganda of the White Panther Party, marijuana advocate, and rock n' rock beatnik poet. Throughout the 1960s, Sinclair dedicated his life to fostering a revolutionary culture of free love, racial harmony, and psychedelic communalism in his home state of Michigan; however, in 1969, he was sentenced to serve a minimum mandatory prison sentence of ten years. His only "crime" was giving two marijuana cigarettes to an undercover narcotics agent. However, Sinclair was not destined to serve the entirety of his sentence, as an army of psychedelic warriors rose up to free him. This month's Psychick Cinema is devoted to Sinclair's story, as well as the larger spiritual revolution he led.

We're happy to mention that John Sinclair himself will be on-hand for the evening!
The film will be proceeded by a lecture by Christian Greer, entitled "Total Assault on Culture: Spiritual Brotherhoods, Urban Tribes, and Psychedelic Churches in the mid-1960s."

EN This essential documentary from 2000 by French nouvelle vague director Agnès Varda frequently ends up in lists of best documentaries ever made. In the film, made at an advanced age, Varda recorded the life of the poorest people in the French countryside: those who collect the turnips or potatoes that are left after the fields have been harvested. Also in the city the poor try to survive by gleaning what has been left by supermarkets in their rubbish bins. Varda focusses her unflinching gaze on the social situation of France and created a strong political portrait of a country full of inequality.
