Parcelpaedia

NL Marina's eerste korte film Parcelpaedia reflecteert en reageert op het 'Italië-syndroom' - een vorm van depressie die specifiek is voor Oost-Europese vrouwen die als zorgverleners in Italië werken. De film volgt Dr. Cara, een fictieve arts die pakketten onderzoekt die door deze migranten naar hun families in Moldavië worden gestuurd. Ze creëert een absurde wereld met een eigen logica, waarin objecten levend en actief zijn binnen de context van de Moldavisch-Italiaanse migratie.
EN Marina’s first short film Parcelpaedia reflects on and responds to the ‘Italy Syndrome’ - a type of depression specific to Eastern European women who work as caregivers in Italy. The film features Dr. Cara, a fictitious physician who examines parcels sent by these migrants to their families in Moldova, creating an absurd world with its own logic, where objects are alive and active in the Moldovan-Italian migration context.

Consider a Tomato

NL Snijdt een tomaat open en beschouw de werelden die erin besloten zitten. Denk aan een recept voor ingemaakte tomaten in een wereld vol met LED-verlichting gekweekte, op steenwol gezaaide tomaten. Overweeg om tomaten te volgen van gesloten Nederlandse kassen naar Moldavië, de thuisbasis van de filmmaker en veel kasmedewerkers die hun eigen tomatenvelden verlaten om achter glazen muren te werken. Beschouw als je gids als een manuscript vol familierecepten en talloze manieren voor het fermenteren van tomaten.
EN Consider cutting a tomato open, consider the worlds contained within. Consider a recipe for pickled tomatoes in a world full of LED-light grown, rock-wool sown tomatoes. Consider following tomatoes from closed-off Dutch greenhouses to Moldova, home to the filmmaker and many greenhouse workers, who leave their own tomato patches to work behind glass walls. Consider your guide to be a manuscript full of family recipes and countless ways of fermenting tomatoes.
Marina Sulima is an artist born in Moldova, working and living in Groningen. She graduated in 2020 from Minerva Academy in Groningen with Parcelpaedia, a short film about Italy Syndrome: a depression specific to Eastern European women who work as caregivers in Italy. The film received a Wildcard from Netherlands Filmfonds, which allowed her to make another hybrid film: Consider a tomato. Marina works with illustration, animation, sculpture and film to create stories that follow the trajectories of certain objects. She wants to engage with a worn-out and heart-broken world and re-center human stories around the land.

Azart – Come Make Art + Q&A

NL Deze documentaire vertelt over de kleurrijke en vrolijke geschiedenis van het Amsterdamse narrenschip Azart, ofwel Ship of Fools, dat ruim 30 jaar over de wereld voer om theater, vreugde en dwaasheid te brengen. Met aan het roer de bedenker van dit varend kunstwerk: kapitein en acteur August Dirks, die ruim 30 jaar op de Azart woonde en werkte. Het Amsterdamse Azartplein is genoemd naar deze zottenschuit. Kapitein August wilde de VOC-route varen, zei hij, maar dan wel op een andere manier. “Niet om te stelen en te kelen, maar om te spelen en te delen.” Inmiddels gestrand – letterlijk – op een Zuid-Amerikaans strandje, waar het wonderlijke verhaal nog altijd verder gaat, onder leiding van een lokale theatergroep.
De filmmakers zullen aanwezig zijn en na de vertoning zal er een online Q&A plaatsvinden met August. Het fotoboek AZART De Blauwe Schuit, filmposters en meer zullen deze avond te koop zijn.
EN This documentary tells about the colorful and cheerful history of the Amsterdam Ship of Fools, which sailed around the world for more than 30 years to bring theatre, joy and folly. At the helm is the creator of this sailing work of art: captain and actor August Dirks, who lived and worked on the Azart for more than 30 years. Amsterdam's Azartplein is named after this fool's boat. Captain August wanted to sail the VOC route, he said, but in a different way. “Not to steal and kill, but to play and share.” Now stranded – literally – on a South American beach, where the wonderful story continues, led by a local theater group.
The filmmakers will be in attendance, and there will be an online Q&A with August after the screening. The photo book AZART De Blauwe Schuit, film posters and more will be for sale this evening.

EN Working Progress is a series of screenings that enable filmmakers to present their unfinished works to meet audiences with the aim of receiving feedback, generating a conversation and network for filmmakers and other film people! Filmmakers and works are chosen through an open call on a monthly basis. For interested parties, please email: workingprogress.ams@gmail.com
The screening will present 3 work in progress films or audiovisual works, with each filmmaker or artist receiving up to 30 minutes to present their unfinished work and talk to the audience about the work. More details about the selected projects to follow in the week before the screening.

NL Het Midherfstfestival is een van de belangrijkste feesten in de Chinese cultuur en in diverse andere Oost- en Zuidoost-Aziatische culturen. Van oudsher is het een moment om bij volle maan samen te komen, waarbij familiebijeenkomsten, verbondenheid en saamhorigheid worden gevierd. We brengen de sfeer van het festival naar Amsterdam met een gezellig samenzijn rond thee, traditionele lekkernijen en film. We hopen een veilige en gastvrije ruimte te creëren om de Chinese cultuur te waarderen en te vieren, zowel voor degenen die ver van huis zijn als voor degenen die deze cultuur willen ontdekken, delen en waarderen. EN The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important celebrations in Chinese culture and across several other East and Southeast Asian cultures. Traditionally a time for gathering under the full moon, it celebrates family reunion, connection and togetherness. We are bringing the spirit of the festival to Amsterdam through an intimate gathering of tea, traditional treats and cinema. Indië Verloren… (Selling a Colonial War)

NL Indië verloren... onthult op confronterende wijze hoe de Nederlandse regering en topdiplomaten via voorlichtingsdiensten, kranten, bioscoopjournalen en propagandafilms het narratief van haar handelingen tijdens de Indonesische strijd voor onafhankelijkheid stuurden, en uiteindelijk de controle over deze geschiedenis verloren. Internationaal gerenommeerde historici uit onder andere Indonesië, Australië, Amerika en Nederland komen aan het woord om inzicht te bieden in deze complexe geschiedenis. Indië verloren... plaatst zo, voor het eerst, deze oorlog en deze geschiedenis in de internationale politieke context van destijds. Regisseur In-Soo Radstake onderzoekt hoe de verschillende frames tot op de dag van vandaag doorwerken.
EN Selling a Colonial War reveals in a confronting manner how the Dutch government and top diplomats steered the narrative of their actions during the Indonesian struggle for independence through information services, newspapers, newsreels, and propaganda films, and ultimately lost control over this history. Internationally renowned historians from Indonesia, Australia, the United States, and the Netherlands, among others, share their perspectives to offer insight into this complex history. The film thus places this war and this history, for the first time, within the international political context of the time. Director In-Soo Radstake explores how the various frames continue to have an impact to this day.

Janine en haar vriend besluiten hun Berlijnse plattenbau-appartement te verruilen voor een huis op het platteland. Maar het pittoreske landschap kan de onmiskenbare realiteit niet verhullen: de dorpelingen ontvangen hen met onverholen vijandigheid. Maar voor hun buurman Peter betekent de aanwezigheid van Janine iets heel anders. Overweldigd door huiselijke problemen, een overwerkte moeder en een gehandicapte broer ziet hij zijn seksuele verlangens ontwaken en begint hij onhandige, ongepaste avances te maken. Janine and her boyfriend decide to change their Berlin plattenbau apartment for a house in the countryside. But the picturesque landscape cannot hide a plain truth: the villagers receive them with clear-cut hostility. For their neighbour Peter, however, Janine’s presence means something entirely different. Overwhelmed by domestic struggles with an overworked mother and disabled brother, he sees his sexual desires awakened and begins to make clumsy, inappropriate advances. Campy, dark and musical, Janine moves to the Country is a story about sexual vigilance in small communities and the realities of breaking away from those around you.
