6 urgent films of resistance
NL Brazil Unfiltered keert terug van 1 tot en met 31 oktober met een speciale selectie documentairefilms die de presidentsverkiezingen die deze maand in Brazilië plaatsvinden in een bredere context plaatsen. Het programma, dat draait om territoriale conflicten en de frontlinies van het verzet, begint met een meesterwerk van wijlen Eduardo Coutinho, gevolgd door een extra vertoning, een reeks van drie films die zich afspelen in het Amazonegebied en een slotevenement met een vertoning over klimaatbestendigheid en ecologische landbouw.
EN Brazil Unfiltered comes back from 1 to 31 October with a special curation of documentary films to contextualise the presidential elections taking place in Brazil this month. Centred around territorial struggles and the frontlines of resistance, the programme starts with a masterpiece from the late Eduardo Coutinho, followed by a bonus screening, a sequence of 3 films set in the Amazon, and a closure event + screening about climate resilience and ecological farming.

Cabra Marcado Para Morrer (Man Marked for Death, 20 Years Later)

EN Listed by the Brazilian Academy as one of the 5 best Brazilian films of all time, Cabra Marcado Para Morrer (Man Marked for Death, 20 Years Later) is a sort of meta-film, with its production interrupted by twenty years of brutal military dictatorship. The film was originally conceived as a fiction based on the true story of João Pedro Teixeira, a peasant leader executed in 1962 by large landowners in rural Pernambuco. His wife, Elizabeth, was to play herself, alongside other villagers who also acted in the film. During shooting in April 1964, the set was stormed by the military, who arrested many crew members and confiscated most of the materials. Twenty years later, the filmmaker returned to the location to meet the survivors, including Elizabeth, and document what had since happened to them and their families. The documentary stands as a powerful testimony to a dark period in Brazilian contemporary history that should never be repeated.

In Ouvidor, het grootste kunstkraakpand van Latijns Amerika, leven 120 kunstenaars uit verschillende landen samen in een levendige micromaatschappij in São Paulo, waar elk van de 13 verdiepingen functioneert als een aparte wijk die gewijd is aan een andere vorm van artistieke expressie. In Ouvidor, the largest art squat in Latin America, 120 artists from various countries coexist in a vibrant micro-society in São Paulo, where each of the 13 floors functions like a distinct neighborhood dedicated to a different form of artistic expression. As they resist constant eviction threats from a government with fascist tendencies in Brazil, internal tensions are fueled by Red Bull’s sponsorship of their Art Biennial.

Ex-Shaman

EN Ex-Shaman is a non-romanticised portrait of the indigenous experience and resilience in contemporary times. Perpera lived in the forest without contact with white people until he was 20 years old. He was a powerful man of the Paiter Suruí people until contact with white men in 1969. Nowadays, illness is a risk for a community increasingly unable to isolate itself from the modernisation brought by white people and the power of the evangelical church.
After being accused by an evangelical pastor of being in league with the Devil, he is forced to become a doorman at the Evangelical church, renouncing his powers as a shaman. However, this mission, commanded by the intolerant pastor, is put to the test when someone from the village witnesses death firsthand, and the indigenous man's sensitivity to the spirits of the forest proves indispensable.

NL The Territory biedt een meeslepende blik ter plaatse op de onvermoeibare strijd van het Uru-eu-wau-wau-volk tegen de oprukkende ontbossing door boeren en illegale kolonisten in het Braziliaanse Amazonegebied. Met adembenemende beelden van het landschap waarnaar de film is vernoemd en een rijk gestructureerd geluidsontwerp neemt de film het publiek mee diep in de gemeenschap van de Uru-eu-wau-wau en biedt het ongekende toegang tot de boeren en kolonisten die het beschermde inheemse land illegaal in brand steken en ontbossen.
De film, die gedeeltelijk door de Uru-eu-wau-wau zelf is opgenomen, is gebaseerd op beelden die gedurende drie jaar zijn vastgelegd, terwijl de gemeenschap haar leven op het spel zette om een eigen nieuwsmediateam op te zetten in de hoop de waarheid aan het licht te brengen.
EN The Territory provides an immersive on-the-ground look at the tireless fight of the Uru-eu-wau-wau people against the encroaching deforestation brought by farmers and illegal settlers in the Brazilian Amazon. With awe-inspiring cinematography showcasing the titular landscape and richly textured sound design, the film takes audiences deep into the Uru-eu-wau-wau community and provides unprecedented access to the farmers and settlers illegally burning and clearing the protected Indigenous land.
Partially shot by the Uru-eu-wau-wau people, the film relies on footage captured over three years as the community risks their lives to set up their own news media team in the hopes of exposing the truth.

Piripkura

EN Piripkura is the chronicle of an expedition in the Amazonian habitat of the nomadic Piripkura ethnic group’s last remaining members, who can only have their territory protected if there is proof they are still living there. Two of only three of them are known to still live in this area. Every two years, a team of governmental workers trek into the jungle for weeks in search of them. Their most important possession is a torch that was lit in 1998 and has remained so ever since. The area where they live is encircled by farms and sawmills, whose almost inevitable expansion is taking place through violent means.
The film sheds light on the tragedy befalling indigenous Amazon people: the systematic violence used against them is a constant menacing presence. Despite the impressive resilience and tenacity of the last of the Piripkura, an inevitable question hangs in the air: how long can it last?
Winner of the Amsterdam Human Rights Award at IDFA 2017.

Composting with worms: how can you keep your kitchen scraps out of the waste stream and instead produce beautiful, rich compost to feed your indoor and outdoor plants? We will explain how, and introduce you to some of our helpful worm friends!
Sprouting for health: Did you know that you can sprout many different kinds of seeds, grains and nuts at home to make hyper nutritious sprouts? We will show you how, and you will take home a sprouting kit and some starter seeds!
Herbs for your balcony or windowsill: We will show you how to make cuttings and divide supermarket plants so that you have an endless supply of fresh herbs at home!
Seed saving: We will bring a collection of seeds – flowers, greens and veggies – for you to take home and sow. Bonus: we'll also teach you how to fold an origami envelope for seed keeping!

Mãos à Terra

In the extreme south of Brazil, over more than four decades farming families, urban environmentalists and progressive clergy join together to imagine and build an alternative to the problematic conventional agricultural model.
Mãos à Terra was produced over six years (2018-2024), portraying environmental activism in Brazil through the lens of the FAE, the largest ecological farming fair in Latin America, held since 1989 in Porto Alegre. Combining interviews with market-goers, agronomists, peasant farmers, environmentalists, and representatives of the MST (Landless Workers' Movement), the film contrasts these farmers' sustainable practices with the monoculture model promoted by the 1960s “Green Revolution”, backed by the military dictatorship, which caused rural exodus and land concentration in Rio Grande do Sul. Drawing on extensive archival research, VHS tapes, photographs, and news reports, along with footage shot across various towns in the state, the film also revives the words of environmentalist José Lutzenberger, drawing a parallel between past human choices and today's climate crises.
