NL Ter ere van Animal's reis en de nominatie voor de Lux European Audience Award is er een vertoning van de film in Filmhuis Cavia, om de makers en de Griekse cinema in het algemeen te vieren. Er zal een proloog zijn van de curator, Dimitra Alexiou, filmcomponist uit Griekenland, en Griekse drankjes om van te genieten na de vertoning. De film heeft de hele wereld over gereisd op belangrijke festivals, heeft verschillende prijzen gewonnen en sluit zijn reis af met deze nominatie. Ga met ons mee op reis naar de realiteit van het toeristische hoogseizoen in Griekenland en de werkende mensen daar.
Hotel Mirage luidt de bedrieglijke naam van een Grieks strandhotel uit de middenklasse. De clientèle is afkomstig uit het wat oudere toeristensegment, dat zich gewillig laat entertainen met dansvoorstellingen, bingo en aquarobics. Het is brood op de plank voor Kalia en haar jongere collega-entertainers die weinig reden tot klagen hebben, zolang ze de voordelen van een bohemien-achtig bestaan maar kunnen genieten. Dat gold ook lange tijd voor Kalia zelf, maar na negen jaar in de business openbaren zich de onvermijdelijke fysieke en mentale slijtageplekken. Aan een val in de discotheek waar de groep af en toe bijbeunt, houdt ze een akelige wond aan haar been over. Maar het is niet alleen fysieke pijn, die ze probeert weg te drinken of te verdoven door seks te bedrijven met willekeurige toeristen.
Kalia's leven is in feite plotloos en dus doet regisseur Sofia Exarchou ook geen moeite haar kijkers met geforceerde wendingen bij de les te houden. Het is de steeds doffer en vertwijfelder wordende blik in Kalia's ogen die het echte verhaal vertelt.

There will be a prologue from the curator, Dimitra Alexiou, film composer from Greece, as well as greek drinks for people to enjoy after the screening. The film has traveled the whole world in important festivals, has won several awards, and concludes its journey with this nomination. Join us for a journey deep inside the truths of the tourism high season in Greece, its ups, its downs, and the reality of the working people there.
The entertainers on an all-inclusive Greek island are preparing for high season. Kalia is the leader of the group and always has to keep the colorful program alive. Hotel Mirage is the deceptive name of a mid-segment Greek beach hotel. Its clientele is made up mainly of older tourists, who love the entertainment laid on in the form of dance shows, bingo and aquarobics. This provides a living for Kalia and the younger entertainers, who don’t have too much to complain about as long as they can enjoy the benefits of a bohemian life. As the work becomes increasingly harder and more intense, things get out of hand. But the show must go on.
At first glance, they are a carefree bunch of pleasure-seekers: the entertainers who earn a crust keeping the guests amused at a Greek beach hotel. But for one of them, this illusion is rapidly approaching its sell-by date.

NLSOTU (Sounds Of The Underground) Festival is een jaarlijks alternatief muziekfestival in Amsterdam sinds 2012. De 14e editie zal plaatsvinden van 8 t/m 12 april 2025, en zoals gewoonlijk op diverse locaties. SOTU heeft een passie voor genre-bending geluid en performances en is gefocust op de promotie van het experimentele, avant-garde en underground.
Het onderwerp van het SOTU festival van dit jaar is 'Entropie'. Wanneer chaos en orde elkaar ontmoeten, komen creativiteit en inspiratie vrij en wordt de gevestigde norm op een zoete manier verbrijzeld. Bewonder de schoonheid van vergankelijkheid en omarm de dissonantie. Een kleine puinhoop kan een grote impact hebben!
ENSOTU (Sounds Of The Underground) Festival is an annual alternative music festival in Amsterdam since 2012. The 14th edition will take place from April 8 to 12, 2025, and as usual at various locations. SOTU has a passion for genre-bending sound and performances which is focused on the promotion of the experimental, avant-garde and underground.
This year's SOTU festival topic is "Entropy." When chaos and order meet, creativity and inspiration are unleashed, and the established norm is sweetly shattered. Admire the beauty of impermanence and embrace the dissonance. A small mess can cause a big impact!
NL Grozny, de hoofdstad van Tsjetsjenië, is een verwoeste stad na twee onafhankelijkheidsoorlogen tegen Rusland. Tussen de ruïnes oefent een groep kinderen Kaukasische danspassen. Ze zijn tussen de zes en zestien jaar oud en behoren tot een Tsjetsjeense dansgroep. De film volgt hen op hun tournee door Europa, waar ze dansen in de theaters van Amsterdam, Krakau, Warschau en Londen. Omdat filmen in Tsjetsjenië niet was toegestaan, gebruikte filmmaker Jos de Putter geheime beelden van dansrepetities tussen de vervallen huizen in Grozny.
Voor de dansers is hun optreden meer dan een uiting van het Tsjetsjeense zelfvertrouwen. Het is een manifestatie van hun bestaan. Wanneer ze dansen, lijken ze te zeggen: Alles om ons heen ligt in puin, maar wij dansen, wij bestaan. Wat begint als een ogenschijnlijke viering blijkt bijna een dwang om te dansen te zijn, om een uitlaatklep te vinden voor de overbelaste zenuwstelsels van deze kinderen, om niet gek te worden. De dans van de groep verandert in een metafoor voor de horror van de dagelijkse realiteit, waarin deze kinderen van het ene op het andere moment kunnen verdwijnen.
Na afloop van de vertoning is er een kort gesprek tussen de regisseur, Jos de Putter, en filmmaker Vladlena Sandu, die als kind tijdens de oorlogsjaren in Grozny woonde.
EN Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, is a devastated city after two wars of independence against Russia. Between the ruins, a group of children practise Caucasian dance steps. They are between six and sixteen of age and belong to a Chechen dance-group. The film follows them on their tour of Europe, where they dance in the theatres of Amsterdam, Krakow, Warsaw and London. Because filming was not allowed in Chechnya, filmmaker Jos de Putter used secret footage of dance rehearsals among the broken-down houses in Grozny.
For the dancers, their performance is more than a manifestation of Chechen self-confidence. It is a manifestation of their existence. When they dance they seem to be saying: Everything around us is in ruins, but we are dancing, we exist. What begins as an apparent celebration turns out to be almost a compulsion to dance, to find a release for these children's over-loaded nervous systems, to keep from going mad. The group's dance turns into a metaphor for the horror of daily reality, in which these children could disappear from one moment to the next.
After the screening, there will be a brief conversation between the director, Jos de Putter, and filmmaker Vladlena Sandu, who lived in Grozny as a child during the war years.

This time AMN is collaborating with UvA Green office for a programme, Ripples, Echoes, and what if the Earth Whispers, which further explores topics around Indigenous lands, territories, kinship and knowledge that are disproportionately affected by the climate change, capitalist economies, exploitation of resources and destructive policies.

EN For this evening Filmhuis Cavia teams up with some local actors to talk about Fortress Europe and its borders. We will start the night with a screening of The Borders of Paradise. This independently produced documentary tells the story of the young men who have fled genocide, violent militias, and have risked their lives crossing the sea to reach the perceived safety of Europe. However, when we find them, in the town of Ventimiglia, at the border of Italy and France, they have ended up in a trap of destitution and marginalization. Unable to gain a foothold in Italian society, while also getting repeatedly pushed back by French border police, they are suffering a ‘slow death’, as one of them puts it.
The viewing of this harrowing film will then be followed by a Q&A with the director, Nicolás Romero Silva, and with Riccardo Biggi, from Stichting Here to Support. Riccardo Biggi will bring a first hand testimony of other borders, including the ones migrants find when they finally get to their country of destination, which he gained when working as the director, script writer and producer of Migration Chronicles, a podcast about border politics created by City Rights Radio as part of a collaboration between Here to Support and Display Europe.

NL Wij van Filmhuis Cavia houden van het vreemde, het ongewone en het experimentele, dus Fantasy A Gets a Mattress leek meteen gemaakt voor ons! We zijn er trots op dat we dit juweeltje van moderne Amerikaanse indie-cinema voor het eerst in Nederland in de bioscoop kunnen vertonen. Fantasy A Gets a Mattress is in zoveel opzichten uniek – het verhaal dat wordt verteld is dat van Fantasy A, een levensechte zelfbeschreven autistische rapper uit Seattle, die besluit dat hij, om zijn droom te verwezenlijken om het groot te maken in de hiphop, eerst een goede nachtrust moet krijgen. Tijdens zijn reis om een comfortabel bed te krijgen, moet hij zich een weg banen langs een heleboel maffe en vreemde personages die zijn dromen willen verpletteren, waardoor de film een verscheidenheid aan thema's aansnijdt, waaronder hiphop, radicale stedelijke verandering, beperkingen, de huisvestingscrisis, artistieke ambitie en wat er nodig is om door te breken. De film werd geproduceerd met een extreem krap budget in vier jaar tijd, maar slaagde er toch in om iets heel bijzonders te creëren, met prachtige shots en een unieke cinematografie samen met een modern verhaal over hosselen in een onvriendelijke wereld.
EN We at Filmhuis Cavia love the weird, the unusual and the experimental, so Fantasy A Gets a Mattress immediately seemed made for us! We are proud to give this little jewel of modern American indie cinema a first theatrical release in the Netherlands. Fantasy A Gets a Mattress is just unique in so many ways – the story told is that of Fantasy A, a real-life self-described autistic rapper from Seattle, who decides that, in order to achieve his dream to make it big in hip hop, he first has to get a good night's sleep. Through his journey to get a comfy bed, he has to hustle his way past a slew of wack and weird characters, who would like to crush his dreams, allowing the film to touch on a variety of themes including hip hop, radical urban change, disability, the housing crisis, artistic ambition, and what it takes to break through. Produced on an extremely tight budget over four years, the film still managed to create something really special, with beautiful shots and a unique cinematography accompanying a modern story about hustling in an unkind world.

Terwijl de studio traditie waardeert en daarop voortbouwt, verkent ze actief formele kruisbestuivingen en verlegt ze de grenzen van animatie door te experimenteren met audiovisuele werken.
Deze vertoning nodigt je uit om de recente producties van de studio te ontdekken, waaronder Stone of Destiny van Julie Černá, die in première ging op de Berlinale 2025. Het programma bevat een mix van klassieke narratieve, documentaire en experimentele films, evenals muziekvideo’s. De films en de studio zelf worden gepresenteerd door het hoofd van de studio, Michaela Režová, gevolgd door een Q&A-sessie.
EN Exploration, experimentation, animation, audiovisual work, short film, artistic solutions, seeking and finding—joy! The Animation and Film Studio at the Academy of Art, Architecture, and Design in Prague, established in 1951, holds the distinction of being the oldest in the Czech Republic. While it values and builds upon tradition, the studio actively explores formal crossovers and pushes the boundaries of animation through experimentation with audiovisual works.
This screening invites you to dive into the studio’s recent productions, including Stone of Destiny by Julie Černá, which premiered at Berlinale 2025. The program features a mix of classic narrative, documentary, and experimental films, as well as music videos. The films and the studio itself will be presented by the head of the studio, Michaela Režová, followed by a Q&A session.
