NL Voor onze eerste openluchtvertoning deze zomer strijken we neer op het
nieuwe terras van café De Ruimte: De Ruimte Buiten! Hier kun je op
zaterdag 29 juli genieten van een zinderende, muzikale documentaire met de
nodige hapjes en drankjes. Voor en na de film kan er gedanst worden op bijpassende muziek van verschillende DJ's.
EN Our first outdoor screening this Summer will land on the new terrace of cafe De Ruimte: De Ruimte Buiten (De Ruimte Outdoor)! On the 29th of July you can enjoy Soul Power - a simmering musical documentary - accompanied by snacks and drinks. Before and after the film you can take it to the dance floor with music by several DJs, in the mood of the film.
NL Het is de zomer van 1974, en de wereld kijkt uit naar het grootste sportevenement aller tijden; the Rumble in the Jungle. Onder het toeziend oog van Mobutu Sese Seko zou Muhammad Ali het opnemen tegen George Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaïre (tegenwoordig DR Congo).
Voor de strijd van de twee zwaargewichten om de wereldtitel werd er een groot internationaal publiek verwacht in de Congo; iets dat de Zuid-Afrikaanse trompettist Hugh Masekela en Amerikaanse muziekproducent Stewart Levine aangrepen om tegelijkertijd een groot muziekfestival te organiseren in Kinshasa. Terug in New York wist Levine onder meer James Brown en zijn JB’s, Bill Withers, B.B. King, the Crusaders en zelfs Celia Cruz enthousiast te krijgen voor een gecombineerd afro-Amerikaans en centraal-Afrikaans programma; met ook musici als Miriam Makeba, Manu Dibango, OK Jazz en Tabu Ley Rochereau.
Het ging alleen niet zoals gepland. Foreman moest door een blessure de strijd met een maand uitstellen, en het festival leek ten dode opgeschreven. Maar zonder het internationale publiek ging Zaïre ’74 toch door, en de reis van de Amerikaanse muzikanten ‘terug naar Afrika’ kreeg een extra spirituele lading. In 3 avonden die hun weerga sindsdien niet meer gekend hebben speelden ze voor een uitzinnig dansend 80.000 koppig Congolees publiek. Soul Power brengt deze legendarische avonden een beetje terug; beelden die pas in 2008 boven water zijn gekomen. Jamsessies in de gehuurde 747 van Air Zaïre, afgewisseld met Black Power overpeinzingen van Ali, Manu Dibango als slangenbezweerder met zijn sopraansaxofoon op de straten van Kinshasa en dan de godfather zelf, James Brown, die in een paars pak met diamanten in de Congolese tropennacht I’m Black and I’m Proud brult.
Voor de film begint zal er onze eigen Rumble at de Ruimte plaatsvinden, dus soul brothers and sisters, you better get up, get on up and stay on the scene (like a ...) !!!!!
EN In the summer of 1974, the world anticipated the greatest sporting event of the century; the Rumble in the Jungle. Under the watchful eye of Mobutu Sese Seko, Muhammad Ali would take on George Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaïre (today DR Congo).
The two heavyweights would fight for the world title, and a large international audience was expected in Kinshasa. South African trumpeter and American record producer Stewart Levine took this opportunity to organise a 3-day music festival in the Congo, with artists like James Brown, Bill Withers, B.B. King, the Crusaders and Celia Cruz performing alongside famous African artists such as Miriam Makeba, Manu Dibango, OK Jazz en Tabu Ley Rochereau.
Things did not go according to plan though, and Foreman had to postpone the fight due to an injury. The festival pressed on: and the journey of the African-American artists back to the Motherland Africa had an extra spiritual meaning, playing for an ecstatic Congolese audience of more than 80.000 people. This film, footage unreleased until 2008, consists of jam-sessions in the chartered Air Zaïre 747, Muhammad Ali musing over some Black Power philosophy, Manu Dibango using his soprano saxophone as a snake charmer on the streets of Kinshasa, and finally the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown, in a purple suit studded with diamonds, bellowing out I’m Black and I’m Proud into the tropical heat of the Congolese night…
