Hide and Seek is een verhaal van jonge mensen van nu — vol levensvreugde, frustratie, lust en verdriet. De film volgt vier jongeren die Londen ontvluchten en een polyamoureuze commune beginnen op het platteland, totale isolatie kiezend als emotioneel, intellectueel en politiek vluchtoord. Vreemde regels en rituelen helpen hen los te komen van hun remmingen en komen ze, al vechtende tegen cynisme en geesten uit het verleden, bij een heel ongewone vreugde. Trailer

Hide and Seek is a story of young people now — full of excitement, frustration, lust, and sadness. The film follows four young people who flee from London and set up in a polyamorous commune in the country, choosing total isolation as a form of emotional, intellectual, and political hiding place. Strange rules and rituals help to loosen their inhibitions as, fighting cynicism and ghosts from the past, they move towards a deeply unconventional joy. Trailer

EN Radley Metzger’s The Image (or its alternate,
much juicier title The Punishment of Anne) is a classic in a genre that
never really took off — the art porn. Metzger got his start in the film
industry editing trailers for European art films from the likes of
Bergman and Truffaut, and he took the lessons he learned and applied
them to the burgeoning 1960s and ‘70s sleaze circuit. What resulted is a
body of work that is truly remarkable: beautiful, poignant, sexy, smart
films that turn you on in all the right places. The Image is a personal
favorite, exploring the world of S&M in a decidedly writerly and
French way - think The Story of O but a bit more flamboyant. This is not

NL Barbet Schroeder's La Vallée uit 1972, ook wel bekend als Obscured by Clouds, is een wonderbaarlijke exploratie van de geest in de jungle van Nieuw Guinea. Viviane, vrouw van de Franse consul, besluit mee te gaan op een trek naar de vallei van de goden en komt onderweg de Mapuga stam tegen die haar onderwijst in seksuele vrijheid en geestverruiming. De soundtrack van deze Franse cultfilm werd verzorgd door niemand minder dan Pink Floyd. De mooie beelden werden gemaakt door cinematograaf Nestor Almendros, die later een Oscar voor zijn werk bij Days of Heaven zou winnen.
EN Barbet Schroeder's La Vallée from 1972, also known as Obscured by Clouds, is a marvelous exploration of the mind set in the jungles of New Guinea. Wife of the French consul Viviane decides to join a trek to the mythical valley of the gods and comes across the Mapuga tribe who teach her about sexual freedom and mind alteration. The soundtrack of the French cult film was created by none other than Pink Floyd. The beautiful images were shot by cinematographer Nestor Almendros, who would win an Oscar for his work on Days of Heaven a few years later.

Sensory Deprivation & Exaltation: Beethoven's 4th Symphony
NL Deze maand zal PSYCHICK CINEMA nog experimenteler zijn dan anders. In plaats van een lezing en film zullen we dit keer samenkomen in de totale duisternis van de bioscoopzaal om te luisteren naar Beethovens's sublieme Vierde Symfonie. In totale duisternis zal de muziek tot leven komen en in neon kleuren uiteenspatten... De symfonie duurt dertig minuten, dus daarna is er uitgebreid tijd om onze visioenen te delen aan Cavia's bar.
Verder zal de Vondelpark Oceanographic Society aanwezig zijn om cryptische toekomstvoorspellingen en zine's uit te delen.
EN This month's PSYCHICK CINEMA will be more experimental than normal. Instead of a lecture, we shall gather together to listen to Beethoven's 4th Symphony in the absolute darkness of the theater room. Come and share in the immense glory of this sublime masterpiece as presented on this auspicious mid-October eve. The symphony is thirty-minutes long, so there will be ample time for sharing our visions afterwards in the Cavia's grotto bar.
The Vondelpark Oceanographic Society will be on-hand distributing zines and dispensing cryptic prophecies.

NL Sympathy for the Devil is Jean-Luc Godard's verbeelding van de roerige jaren zestig. Wat lijkt te beginnen als een studio-film met de Rolling Stones, verandert langzaam in politiek-ideologische psychedelia. Een aantal Black Panther leden dragen op poëtische en absurdistische wijze werk voor van onder andere LeRoi Jones en Eldridge Cleaver. Godard behandelt onderwerpen als de Feministische beweging, de mei-opstand in Frankrijk en de subtiele kracht van taal. Hij laat met deze film zien dat de westerse cultuur vernietigd dient te worden, maar dat dat alleen kan door het intellectualisme te verwerpen. "Er is maar één manier om een intellectuele revolutionair te zijn; dat is door juist géén intellectueel te zijn."
EN Sympathy for the Devil is Jean-Luc Godard's imagination of the agitated sixties. What seems to begin as a studio film with the Rolling Stones, slowly changes into political-ideological psychedelia. It deals with subjects like the role of the media, the mediated image, a growing technocratic society, Women's Liberation, the May revolt in France and the power of language. Godard also examines the role of the revolutionary within western culture. Although he believes western culture needs to be destroyed, it can only be done so by the rejection of intellectualisation. "There is only one way to be an intellectual revolutionary, and that is to give up being an intellectual"

EN RietveldTV is Gerrit Rietveld Academie’s monthly TV show hosted by AT5 and afterwards shown online. Every month an alumnus is invited to use the audiovisual 12 minutes as a framework to develop a new work. The current season is the approximately 10th season, reason for some festiveness! RietveldTV by Susan Kooi: from up above, the earth glowed like a blue LED
During a three month artist in residency in Arita, Japan, Susan Kooi made a collection of porcelain works based on the region’s stories. In the current RietveldTV episode one of these stories is reenacted in the archeologic site Yoshinogari. The world’s first pottery comes from Japan. Around 17.000 years ago -the beginning of the Jomon period in prehistoric Japan, hunter-gatherers started making pots to boil food. These hunter-gatherers started making clay figurines we now call Dogū, usually representing humans, specifically women. Most dogū are very precisely made, but with odd details, such as having 6 fingers, wearing masks or special attire that makes them look like space travellers. There are lots of theories of non-scientific nature about Dogū, they are part of Ancient Alien theories and associated with out-of-place artifacts. Susan Kooi went on an archeological expedition in search of her own Dogū.
Plus a side program with contributions by archeologist Colleen Morgan (University of York), Hyaronic FF/dcc and a Q&A with Susan Kooi.

NL To be Takei is een onafhankelijke documentaire van Jennifer Kroot over 77-jarige Star Trek-lieveling en gay-icoon George Takei. Takei, die in Star Trek de rol van Hikaru Sulu speelde, staat bekend om zijn droge gevoel voor humor en het homorechtenactivisme waar hij zich in zijn latere leven op zou werpen. De film volgt Takei en zijn echtgenoot Brad in hun dagelijks leven, maar vertelt ook over het moeizame verleden van de ster en hoe hij het stereotype voor Aziatische Amerikanen omver wierp.

Takei, who is best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek, is also famous for his witty sense of humour and his work as a gay-rights activist. The film follows Takei and his husband Brad in their daily life, but also tells the story of his troubled past and how he was able to overthrow the Asian-American stereotype.
